A man was arrested on Thursday in connection with a child abduction investigation in New York, the police department in the city said.
Police responded to a report of a child being held hostage in the parking lot of a mall on Sunday, the department said in a statement.
The child was reportedly taken into the parking garage of a shopping center and held captive, it said.
The suspect has been identified as 36-year-old Kevin L. Wiebe of the Bronx.
Wiebe was charged with kidnapping, child abduction, second-degree rape, first-degree child abuse and two counts of first-time sex offense, police said.
He was being held at the Westchester County jail on $150,000 bail.
Police in New Jersey said on Thursday they were investigating a report that a child had been held captive by a man in a car in the state’s Fairmount Mall.
Authorities said that after officers were called, they located a man matching the description of the suspect.
They found the child in the back seat of the vehicle, police in Jersey City said.
A manhunt was launched and the suspect was captured.
