NEW ORLEANS — The first symptoms of coronaviral illness have appeared in a Florida man who was rushed to a hospital on Sunday after a weekend of vomiting, diarrhea and diarrhea, and he died from the illness.
Scott Withers, 30, was admitted to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Daytona Beach on Sunday night, according to a spokeswoman.
He was taken to Jackson County Medical Center where he died of a suspected coronaviruses coronavie infection, the spokeswoman said.
The Florida Department of Health confirmed Monday that Witherspers death was the first in the state.
The agency is asking for public prayers for his family, who was from Kentucky.
The disease, which can cause severe illness and death, is spreading rapidly.
There are about 3,500 confirmed cases in Florida, and more than 3,000 cases have been reported in Puerto Rico.
The CDC is working closely with the Florida Department the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Florida Health and the National Institutes of Health.
